F. Y. (EDDY) LIEW教授简介
刘富友,英国格拉斯哥大学教授,因其在免疫学、炎症和癌症方面持续四十年,横跨三大洲的杰出科研工作而于2012年4月荣选为英国皇家学院院士。英国学院颁发这一终身荣誉给英国和英联邦国家那些在科学、工程和科技方面做出杰出贡献的科技工作者,这其中包括80多位诺贝尔奖获得者。能够获得英国皇家学院院士称号是该国科研人员所能够获得的最高荣誉。
刘教授曾就读于双溪毛糯小学(1950-53),吉隆坡中华独立中学,并在吉隆坡圣约翰学校赢得哥伦布计划奖学金从而前往澳大利亚求学。刘教授从澳大利亚蒙纳士大学获得化学学士学位,在澳洲国立大学取得博士学位。留学英国之前曾在马来亚大学执教五年。
刘教授的重大发现包括:发现T细胞的异质性从而增进了对利什曼病理解和新治疗思路的提出。指出了一氧化氮对机体免疫系统中的调节作用。这些研究成果增进了人类对免疫系统如何保护机体免受疾病困扰的认识,并对新的疗法的开发提供了思路。他是免疫学界的世界知名的专家。刘教授培养、指导过来自世界各地的30多位博士生和40多位博士后,其中很多已经成为各国的知名教授。刘教授曾经受约在哈弗、牛津、剑桥和北京大学等世界名校做过演讲。
刘教授曾被选为欧洲免疫学会主席(2006-2009);现担任英国医学研究委员会委员,德国科学会委员,香港研究资助局评审委员会主席,香港科学会委员;他同时担任英国、德国、新加坡和香港的多所大学的学术评审会委员;欧洲免疫学杂志主编和欧洲免疫学年会的主席;他被多所中国、巴西和沙特阿拉伯的大学聘为客座教授。
Professor Foo Yew (Eddy) Liew at the University of Glasgow, UK has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society London (FRS), it was announced in April 2012. Professor Liew was elected FRS due to his pioneering work in the field of immunology and inflammatory diseases in a career spanning four decades and three continents.
Including more than 80 Nobel Laureates, the Royal Society awards lifetime fellowships to the most eminent leaders in the world of science, engineering and technology in the UK and the Commonwealth and becoming a FRS is one of the highest honours available to academics.
Professor Liew is an old boy of the Sungei Buluh Primary School from 1950-53. He then went on to Chung Hwa High School Kuala Lumpur and St. John Institute Kuala Lumpur where he won a Colombo-Plan Scholarship (5) to study in Australia. Professor Liew obtained a first class degree in Chemistry at the Monash University Melbourne and PhD from the Australian National University, Canberra. He taught for 5 years at the University Malaya before taking up appointments in the UK.
Important breakthroughs including discovering T cell heterogeneity, which led to a greater understanding and treatments of the disease Leishmaniasis, and pinpointing the role that Nitric Oxide plays in regulating the body’s immune system. By common acclaim, Professor Liew’s research have had a major impact on our understanding how the body’s immune response protects us against diseases and has opened the door to the development of novel and more effective therapies. He is a world leader in the field of Immunology.
Professor Liew has supervised over 40 postdoctoral fellows and over 30 PhD students from all over the world. Professor. Many of his students are now well known professors in many countries. Professor Liew has given lectures in many leading universities in the world, including Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge and Beijing Universities.
Professor Liew was elected President of the European Federation of Immunology Societies (2006-2009). Professor Liew is a member of the Medical Research Council UK, Member of the German Research Council, Chairman of the Research Grant Panel, Hong Kong, and a member of the Hong Kong Research Council. He is also a member of the review committee for Universities in the UK, Germany, Singapore and Hong Kong. He is Editor-in-Chief of the prestigiousEuropean Journal of Immunologyand President of the European Congress of Immunology. He is also a visiting Professor in China, Brazil and the Saudi Arabia.
